Crushing

This is the first step of brewing ! select the type of grain used (often barley, but also wheat, rye, oats…) and the type of malt (light malt for a blonde, malt cooked to bring more character, or malt cooked to bring roasted flavour) depending on the recipe.

The purpose of crushing and passing the grains in a mill, in order to break the grain in half to extract the elements in the brewing stages. If it’s ground too coarsely we risk an extraction efficiency problem, if it’s ground too fine it’s a filtration problem
